BIO
Louisa’s work explores the fine line between Fine Art, Portrait, and Documentary Photography.
Best known by Art Collectors for her elegant oversized tribal portraits of women in Africa, Louisa powerfully enhances indigenous culture with humanitarian visual storytelling.
Louisa was raised in Nairobi, Kenya, surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultural diversity that has informed her creative expression.
She went on to study Fine Art majoring in photography at Rhodes University, South Africa. Her early photographic career began in London where she lived for four years before moving to Australia where she continues to freelance globally often returning to remote regions of Eastern and Southern Africa for commissions and various photographic projects.
A majority of Louisa’s work retains a monochrome Fine Art studio style, reflecting her classical Fine Art training. This is evident in the clean textures and use of light that accentuates her subjects’ features and tribal adornment, translating into powerful visual storytelling. Louisa’s classic, elegant style is widely themed throughout her African portrait, wildlife photography, architectural equestrian studies, and, in her latest work featuring the feminine form.
With a stellar review in Rise Art’s ‘ART Speak’, New York Art curator Lori Zimmer, named Louisa’s black and white African tribal portraits a ‘Modern Classic to Own’.
Louisa’s powerful indigenous portraits reflect an intimacy in her subjects that leaves one with a deep sense of nostalgia for the romantic Africa she knew from childhood.
Louisa’s career began in London when she won the 'Travel Photo of the Year' competition category 'Face to Face’, it was the largest photographic competition of its kind in Britain at the time.
She went on to shoot in Brazil for the Brazilian Tourist Board and had her first solo show in London. Louisa has since staged several successful solo and joint exhibitions in Australia and overseas. Louisa’s portrait and documentary photography has had worldwide acclaim gracing numerous magazine front covers, coffee table books, and various magazine spreads in Pro Photo, Home Beautiful, British Vogue, and Africa Geographic, to name a few. (See Media section). Louisa presently lives and works as a freelance photographer based out of Sydney and Byron Bay, Australia.
